MRK 460 - Global Marketing and Business
WEEK by WEEK DETAILED LECTURE NOTES 2022 Sept - Oct - Nov - Dec |
FUNDAMENTAL understanding of what we are doing here
Understanding what the
deliverables are
Just finished a conversation
with a group that was slightly confused
They created a Powerpoint
which they were going to use for their final group presentation video
Basically each person did
a video of them talking about each powerpoint slide, then combined those
videos to one big video – which is, in a
sense, their whole group
presentation / video
- THAT is the video you
send to me – you do NOT need to send to me each powerpoint
- Just imagine all group
members are standing in front of the class, each, one by one talking about
their part, and you have a video of all of them
together
- Which therefore allows
the students to watch it and learn about the main point you learned about
the company you did
- So, the video to accompany
your written report is NOT about everything in the written report – it
is just a few things each group member speak
about, that were interesting
and useful that they learned
- So
- So… all these 4 video
segments get combined into one single video and you send that video to
me by email, and then I put it up on my
YouyTube channel – to educate
next term’s new students in the class
- Also – when you put your
names on the first part of the combined video you do NOT need to put in
your last name or your student number –
cause remember it is going
on YouTube – just put in people’s first name only
- When you send me the email
with this accompanying video, THAT is when you spell out each group members
name so I know who was in the
group
To understand this in simple
terms, just imagine the original way we did things before covid
1 you do a final group project
– everybody in the group writes some part – you combine all parts into
one long word.doc……you print out this
word.doc – attach all the
pages together and (normally, before Covid) you hand it in to me in person
1B you combine all parts
into one long word.doc ………you then email that to me
2 you do a presentation
to class so the students can learn from what you did – but, because of
Covid, we do not have an attended class, so
instead you make a video…of
what you WOULD HAVE DONE in a presentation
2B then you email that video
to me
3 then you are finished…you
graduate
….and get a job
…and 5 years later
you email me to say you are successful, and I invite you to come back and
be a guest lecturer to the new students
… and you do a great
job
…and I retire
…..and you take over
and become a Professor and have a fulfilling happy life
…The End.

Political
Environment
witiger.com/internationalbusiness/politicalenvironment.htm The Political / Legal / Regulatory Environment can be simply described as the laws and regulations that business has to follow in order to make sure the business owners do not get arrested, or have the business fined for noncompliance of some regulation. Laws
are made by politicians - who enact these laws based on the likelihood
they will get re-elected. The political environment is affected and
effected by politicians who in turn are influenced by changes and challenges
in the social - cultural enviromment (languages, ethnicity, immigration
etc.), challenges in the economic enviromment (currency exchange rates,
corporate activity, unemployment rates) and also to some extent the geographic
environment in terms of how the region is laid out, rivers, mountains,
proximity to other countries, weather, seasons etc.

It
is suggested (WTGR) that a different way
of seeing this problem is not to look at climate change, but rather to
look at human population change - more
specifically the change in "where" humans are moving to work, and life.
An earthquake in a rural farming area may effect dozens of people; an earthquake in a large city of many apartment buildings, could effect thousands of people. WTGR Nov 2021 |

T.J. produced this informative video in July 2022 to explain the signifcance
of the Euro reaching equal value with the Euro.
Basically, the value of the U.S. dollar has declined in the past few years to the point where 1 Euro is worth 1 Dollar. A weaker dollar will help
U.S. companies export - but it will make it more expensive for U.S. companies
importing materials and supplies to manufacture "Made in America" things.

Pitfalls of Exporting
|
Potential
Disadvantages of Exporting
(Pitfalls of Exporting) Tue Nov 22th Section SCC Wed Nov 24th Section SAA, Wed Nov 24th Section SBB Fri Nov 26h Section SDD Why would you discuss Disadvantages of Exporting in a course which spends most of the time discussing how to export? Answer: because the course (MRK460, MGSC44, IBM600) is not, strictly speaking, "how to export". Sometimes managers need to make decisions about whether to pursue a new situation, or not: what we call a GO - NO GO decision. For the purposes of saving money and running the company efficiently, sometimes it is better to NOT GO - that is to say NOT export because the cost might be too high, or you may be consuming resources you don't have - it might be better to concentrate on making money on your "regular" business. Deciding NOT to export doesn't mean your company is not involved in international business

Letters
of Credit
witiger.com/internationalbusiness/LCs.htm The subject of LCs is not normally something you would teach in a general overview course on Global Marketing and Business - but for some people who are interested in actually becoming involved in exporting and importing, LCs are a necessary thing which you must understand.. Common Problems with Letters
of Credit
If an LC is irrevocable (meaning the credit cannot be amended or canceled without the agreement of all parties) then the buyer may have a big problem if something develops that they cannot fix - because the 3rd party will be obliged to pass the money to the seller once the goods are landed. |
"Letters
of Credit are guarantees of payment to help you make purchases or transact
business with companies with whom you have limited trading experience or
credit history."

In
this article, Prof. Richardson is discussing the challenges of developing
a "Canadian Brand" for the clothing industry. In addressing this formidable
challenge, Richardson explains that the ability to do this depends on how
we can deal with the influences of the
o competitive environment o social / cultural environment o technological environment o political / legal / regulatory environment o economic environment o geographic environment Richardson explains that these environments make it difficult for Canada to consider having a global brand for clothing similar to the Italians or French, instead it is recommended that we "embrace" the extreme weather challenges of our geographic environment and "brand" Canadian clothing as being the most robust and strong for cold weather. |

99.9

many
electronic devices and their component parts are made by the millions
if
you say that Quality Control is aiming for 99.9%, then when it is applied
to 200 million, the potential number of devices with errors or problems
is... see below
Foxconn in China can regularly produce 500,000 iPhones a day - that means, mathematically they have, potentially, a risk of producing 500 faulty devices each day 500 per day x 365 days = 182,500 - which appears to be a very high number for potentially unhappy customers. Samsung
regularly sells over 400 million phones a year - that is 400,000 faulty

The Competitive Environment
is slightly more important than the other 5 environments - mostly because
business people tend to "miss" identifying the wide range of other enterprises
that are direct and indirect, and future competitors.

Potential Disadvantages of
Exporting witiger.com/internationalbusiness/disadvantages.htm
Why would you discuss Disadvantages
of Exporting in a course which spends most of the time discussing how to
export?
For the purposes of saving
money and running the company efficiently, sometimes it is better to NOT
GO
- that is to say NOT export
because the cost might be too high, or you may be consuming resources you
don't have
- it might be better to
concentrate on making money on your "regular" business.
Deciding NOT to export doesn't mean your company is not involved in international business
you can still be involved in importing, directly, or indirectly
Quality
TQM JIT why 99.9 accuracy is not enough
when
you manufacture a large number of devices
witiger.com/internationalbusiness/TQM.htm
witiger.com/internationalbusiness/JIT.htm
99.9
means 1 in 1,000 is faulty
if
you increase the number manufactured, you increase the number of faulty
products, 99.9 means 10 in 10,000 1,000 in a million/
When
you have many large global companies making products in the millions, you
have a potential of thousands of unhappy customers.
Foxconn
in Zhengzhou in China can regularly produce 500,000 iPhones a day
-
that means, mathematically they have, potentially, a risk of producing
500 faulty devices each day
500
per day x 365 days = 182,500 - which appears to be a very high number for
potentially unhappy customers.
