In the 3rd decade of the new millenium medium and large sized companies are realizing more and more that success is not just about being biggest or most innovative, but rather success is about being to handle severe problems that can effect an entire industry sector (or the entire world in a pandemic). To be able to survive severe problems it helps to watch and study companies and enterpises that "came before" so you can avoid the problems they faced. Success is not about doing the right thing it is more about avoiding the bad things  that could produce "unrecoverable problems"

INTRODUCTION R.I.M. Blackberry' versus Apple

As we move in to the 3rd decade of the new millenium, the first decade 2000-2009 passed quickly and the 2nd decade 2010-2019 passed even more quickly in the minds of most people. It becomes apparent that the conventional wisdom of business success and business models has been effected by some global events (Covid 19 2020..2021) that have had a huge impact on the way we work and live. 2000 - 2009 In the first decade of the new millenium we had a number of "dot.com" companies demonstrate the wisdom of the ancient phrase. Early Bird Gets the Worm Canadian company Research In Motion (founded in 1984) went public on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 1997 and then listed their shares on the U.S. Nasdaq in 1999 raising 1/4 of a billion dollars. RIM's "Blackberry" got boosted by the "Technological Environment" in 2002 when cellphone service was introduced and they reached 1 million subscribers in 2 years.

R.I.M. Blackberry' versus Apple

Things looked good for RIM until Apple unleashed the first iPhone in 2007. Then as the world surged ahead with tech developments of various kinds the cellphone market was born and RIM faced competition from companies that had never previously been "in that space". Second Mouse Gets the Cheese 2010 - 2019 2011 RIM cut 2,000 jobs while Apple surged ahead with their new tablet and apps for Apple where being developed all over. But, it was no longer a two-way race..by Q3 2011 Samsung "..surged past Apple to the number one spot among phone manufacturers, based on shipments." 2012 RIM's founding coCEOs resigned.  By Q3 2018 Apple made history by becoming the first U.S. company to be valued at over $1 trillion.

Yahoo founded in 1994. Excite founded in 1995 Altavista founded in 1995 Ask Jeeves founded in 1996 Google launched in 1998 2021? Google # 1  Bing #2 Baidu #3 Google is now (2021) larger than all other search engines combined,  90%+ of the total market)

When I contemplated making this page I reflected that the phrase "early bird gets the worm" seems such a reasonable understanding that it must exist in other languages. In Q2 2021 I asked my students in MRK460 (Global Marketing and Business) if they could provide the similar phrase in other laguages.
